Play it Safe, 2020
Video Installation
Various Locations, Boston and Cambridge, MA

Made in response to the COVID crisis, the video, Play it Safe, looks at ways in which female performances have changed onscreen through the decades and ways that they have stayed the same. Created by pirating clips from films that won Best Actress, Best Film, or were the highest-grossing of the year they were released, the piece combines disparate performances into a monologue that explores hope, hysteria, fear, and the public face of "femininity" in the United States. The video will be projected on public buildings in various locations throughout Boston during April and May.

A series of five limited edition prints, produced through a multi-layered printing process, compliments the film. The prints are created from stills that represent the five greatest outliers in the history of the Best Actress award: Halle Berry in Monster's Ball, Hilary Swank in Boy's Don't Cry, Charlize Theron in Monster, Jodi Foster in Silence of the Lambs, and Olivia Colman in The Favourite.
